Las cifras que facilitan las estadísticas oficiales ponen de manifiesto que el municipio de Murcia ha alcanzado, en los últimos años, un notable incremento en sus habitantes y que todavía ha sido más significativo el progreso urbanizador que ha experimentado. Conocer las causas y las consecuencias de estos cambios, constituye el principal objetivo de este trabajo. Para ello nos apoyamos en fuentes estadísticas y bibliográficas y utilizamos métodos de análisis propios de la Geografía. Las conclusiones que se obtienen muestran que se ha producido una redistribución de la población hacia espacios del municipio poco o nada urbanizados a principios de la década de los noventa del siglo XX y, a la vez, una pérdida de efectivos en barrios tradicionales de la capital municipal, de los que algunos han sufrido una notable degradación. Por otro lado, la expansión urbana ha obligado a suministrar en esos espacios dotaciones y servicios con el fin de satisfacer las necesidades de los nuevos residentes.

The numbers provide official statistics show that the municipality of Murcia has obtained, in the last years, a remarkable increase in their population, but most significant has yet been development progress that has experienced. With these hypotheses, the principal aim of this work is to know the consequences of these changes. For this we used statistical and bibliographical sources and methods of own analyses of the Geography. The obtained results show the existence of a redistribution of the population towards spaces of the municipality little or urbanized at all at the beginning of the nineties of the 20th century and, at the same time, a loss of strength in traditional neighborhoods of the municipal capital, that some have suffered a notable degradation. Likewise, the urban expansion has forced supply in those spaces appropriations and services to meet the needs of new residents.
