In order to legitimize their own modernity, the writers and critics associated with the Spanish American “Boom,” used to depict Rómulo Gallegos as a neo-naturalist or neo-romantic author still active in the 20th-century. This article aims at reconstructing the original horizon of expectations of Rómulo Gallegos’s Doña Bárbara in order to comprehend its initial impact and prestige. It argues that its success was due in part to affinities between the Latin American literary regionalism and the avant-garde aesthetics. Understanding Gallegos’s interest on cinema is essential to redefine the links of his 1929 novel and the art of his time.
