En el complejo marco de la expansión del cristianismo en el mundo romano, la
producción de un conjunto organizado de imágenes testimonia la continuidad de
ciertas tradiciones y la introducción de nuevos contenidos. La necesidad de crear
una iconografía acorde con la difusión de la doctrina, plantea la necesidad de
recurrir a formas y significados ampliamente arraigados en el imaginario colectivo.
De este modo se produce la conservación y reconversión de la cultura antigua a
través del repertorio icónico cristiano.

Within the complex context of the spread of Christianity in the Roman world,
the production of an organized set of images testifies to both the continuity of
traditions and the introduction of new contents. The need to create an iconography
relevant to the spread of the doctrine relies on the desire to draw on forms and
meanings largely rooted in the collective imagination. This way, the preservation
and transformation of the ancient culture fi nd its continuity in the Christian iconic
repertoire.
