In any representation of the past, different memories that struggle
for their inscription in history are in conflict. That is one of the reasons why
memory and forgetting must be considered when it comes to historical elaborations.
These aspects are central not only in the public debates, but also
in the main discussion of the philosophy of history. In this respect, Walter
Benjamin and Reinhart Koselleck offer in the German scenario influential and
crucial thoughts for the analysis of this subject. This paper considers the mentioned
aspects from both writers under three axes: experience, memory and
possible uses of the past.
