Los jesuitas expulsados de América, encontraron como único refugio algunas ciudades de Italia donde pudieron cumplir su destierro. Entre ellos había una élite intelectual de humanistas que habían liderado el funcionamiento de los colegios mayores, los cuales gozaban de gran prestigio. En Italia, exonerados de sus funciones, se dedicaron a escribir y las prensas italianas publicaron lo más conspicuo de esa producción. Entre ellos sobresalieron las obras de Rafael Landívar y Diego José Abad, compuestas en versos latinos, ejemplos de este Humanismo y testimonios de la expulsión de la Orden.

The banished jesuits from América found as only refuge some Italian cities were they could fulfill their banishment. Among them there was an intellectual elite of humanists that had directed the performance of universities, whom enjoyed great prestige. In Italy they devoted themselves to writing, and the Italian presses published the finest of their production. Among them excelled the works of Rafael Landívar and Diego José Abad, written in latin verses. Examples of this humanism and testimonies of the order´s banishment.
