Artemisia era hija del artista Orazio Lomi, llamado Gentileschi. Ella misma era pintora. Siendo muy joven fue violada y luego tuvo que pasar por un proceso judicial lleno de humillaciones para limpiar su nombre. Durante los años en que se produjeron esos acontecimientos dramáticos no dejó de pintar. Tenía conciencia de que en ello estaba su salvación. De aquel período es su adhesión al caravaggismo y a los juegos violentos de claroscuro. Sus preferencias temáticas se volcaban a las heroínas bíblicas y mitológicas, mujeres fuertes, sabias y enteras que, como ella, hicieron frente al infortunio que les tocó vivir.

Artemisia Gentileschi was the daughter of the artist Orazio Lomi, called Gentileschi. She was herself a painter. As a Young girl she was raped and then had to undergo a law suit full of humiliations in order to clear her name. During the time of these dramatic incidents she never stopped painting. She was aware that in this activity lay her salvation. It was in this period that she adhered to caravaggism and to the violent games of chiaroscuro. Her themes turned with preference to biblical and mythological heroines, strong women, wise and of great principles who, like her, had to face misfortune and overcome it.
